Volunteer FAQ

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Age requirements depend on the specific volunteer opportunity and are listed in each volunteer description. Most HEART Kitchen shifts are 18+, unless the description says otherwise.

Is everyone accepted as a Volunteer?
At Ann’s Heart, we believe everyone has something to contribute. Volunteers of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities are welcome, and we offer a variety of roles across our programs. Some opportunities have specific age or participation requirements, but we strive to create meaningful volunteer options for adults, youth, and families alike. All volunteers are expected to follow Ann’s Heart’s safety guidelines and code of conduct to help create a welcoming and respectful environment for everyone.

When will you respond to my application?
Our volunteer application is quick and self-guided. After you submit it, you don’t need to wait for a response, you can begin signing up for volunteer shifts immediately.

Do I need to arrive early?
Aim to arrive close to your scheduled shift time. Because we have a small staff and are often actively preparing for the shift, early arrivals can interfere with preparation and we’re not able to accommodate volunteers before their shift begins.

Can I get my hours documented for school or work?
Absolutely! Please speak with the staff member leading your volunteer group, or email volunteer@annsheart.org if you need documentation for past volunteer shifts.

Do you offer court appointed community service hours?

Yes, Ann’s Heart can verify court-appointed community service hours. Volunteers must complete the volunteer application, register for the required number of shifts to satisfy the hours needed, and email volunteer@annsheart.org in advance to make arrangements for documentation.
What if I have to leave my shift early?

Life happens! Accommodations may be possible for irregular schedules. Please reach out to volunteer@annsheart.org to ask questions or make arrangements about your shift.

Are there any evening or weekend shifts?

Sometimes. While most volunteer shifts are Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, we do occasionally offer evening or weekend opportunities. Keep an eye on annsheart.org/get-involved for posted shifts.
Is a criminal background check required?

Most volunteer opportunities do not require a background check. Some roles, such as those involving shelter guests or minors, may require one. Any background check requirements will be clearly noted in the volunteer shift description.

Is there a time commitment to volunteer?

No, there is no required time commitment. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for shifts as their schedules allow, and we’re grateful for any amount of time they’re able to share.

Where should I park?

We recommend volunteers find parking on Church Street or in District Lot Number 9 (Church St. Lot) A complete list of parking options can be found at annsheart.org/parking

If I have to cancel or I will be late, what do I do?

We understand that life happens! If you need to cancel a shift, please email volunteer@annsheart.org as soon as possible. As much advance notice as you can give is greatly appreciated!

Where do I go for my shift?

Ann’s Heart is located at 35 Hall Street in Phoenixville, PA. Your volunteer shift description will include details about where to go when you arrive.
HEART Kitchen volunteer shifts take place in the HEART Kitchen, located on the lower level of the former Sacred Heart School building. The entrance is under the canopy at the bottom of the stairs, accessible from the parking lot.

What if we are experiencing inclement weather? Will my shift be canceled?

Ann's HEART follows the guidance of the Phoenixville Office of Emergency Management regarding campus operations during severe weather. The HEART will be closed for volunteer shifts whenever the borough declares a Weather Emergency. Additionally, The HEART may cancel volunteer shifts at its discretion if weather conditions could prevent staff or volunteers from safely traveling to campus. Closure notifications will be sent via email as early as possible. All volunteers are strongly encouraged to check their email before their scheduled shift any time inclement weather is anticipated.
